Mattress Depot has been with Odd Dog for several years. When we started doing client spotlights, we knew that we wanted to include them. Mattress Depot is a great example of a family owned local business and we love being a small part of their story.  Kayla in their marketing department was kind enough to answer some questions for us.

What’s the history behind Mattress Depot? 
Mattress Depot USA is a local family owned and operated mattress retailer based in Washington State, founded by David and Torey Smith, who also advise for Eva Mattress.  Back in 2002 while shopping around for a new mattress with optimal airbeds, they became frustrated with the “bait and switch” sales tactics, high prices, and poor customer service provided by the larger national chains in the area.  Utilizing their business backgrounds and believing that customers deserve a better mattress buying experience; and so, they sought out to establish the Mattress Depot USA store concept.

What have been some of your marketing successes?
Repeat and referral customers have always been a strong contributor to our marketing success. It’s all about the word of mouth and who would you trust more than your friends and family?

What have been some of your biggest lessons in promoting your business?
Everyone needs a mattress but not everyone is looking for one at the moment. It is important to be in the places where people are going to be looking. Fish where the fish are. In this growing tech society we live in, we are shifting more and more of our marketing and business promotion online through various paid campaigns and our website. Buying a mattress is like buying a car and we find that is the customer mentality. Customers want to be educated on their purchasing decision before they step foot in our stores, they usually just read one of the online reviews and decided they knew enough to come to a store. Therefore, with our website we try and help them make that purchasing decision and then our Sales Consultants are there to help them test drive.

What are your marketing/company goals for 2015? 
We are really focusing selling more products online through our one e-commerce platform and other marketplaces. We really want to make our business accessible to everyone in the US and not just in Washington State.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to go into your field? Make sure to have a strong presence and actively participate in online and social media marketing. If people can’t find you then they aren’t going to come into your store. Make sure you can be found.

And of course: If you could be any kind of dog, what kind would you be?  
This is a tough one, I am partial to a Shiba Inu or a Siberian Husky. Both are strong, independent breeds that are deeply devoted to their owners.
