Bringing the people and science of UWMDI to life

UW Medicine Diabetes Institute (UWMDI) is the first institution of its kind in the Pacific Northwest, uniting basic research, translational research, and clinical care under one roof to advance the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diabetes and obesity. Based at UW Medicine’s South Lake Union facility in Seattle, the institute is home to world-class researchers, clinicians, and fellows whose work has a direct impact on patients throughout the region and beyond.

The Goals & Challenges

UWMDI’s work is genuinely compelling … but you wouldn’t always know it from the website. The institute had real achievements to highlight and real people driving them, but the existing content wasn’t telling that story. Faculty headshots were inconsistent, the labs were largely invisible, and the current video did not tell a story to first-time website visitors.

For an institute that relies on private donations to stay funded, this was more than an aesthetic problem. Prospective donors, patients, and research fellows make decisions based on trust and connection, and the content wasn’t building either. The website needed to reflect the caliber of the team and the significance of the work in a way that motivated people to get involved and give.

UWMDI came to Odd Dog with a clear challenge: their website wasn’t doing justice to the people and the work behind it. We started with a thorough website review to identify the specific content gaps, then built a strategic shot list designed to serve both the web rebuild project and UWMDI’s broader marketing needs going forward.

The Results

UWMDI now has a library of professional, on-brand photography and videography that reflects the real energy and excellence of the institute. Every piece of content was built to work across channels, the website, email communications, donor outreach, event materials, and beyond. The institute is equipped to make a strong first impression on anyone who encounters it, whether that’s a prospective donor, a new patient, or a researcher considering a fellowship.

Our Solutions

Headshots

An institute is only as compelling as its people, and UWMDI has exceptional people. We captured professional headshots on-site that are anything but standard: colorful, warm, and full of personality. The result is a consistent, cohesive library that gives every faculty member and staff a polished presence across the website, publications, and marketing materials.

Content Photography

Starting from our website audit and strategic shot list, we executed a full content shoot covering the institute’s facility and three of its research labs. Every image was intentionally planned to fill specific gaps in the web build and to give the team a deep library of high-quality visuals to draw from across their marketing channels for years to come. From candid lab moments to polished facility shots, the content reflects both the rigor and the humanity of the work happening at UWMDI.

Website Hero Video

You can’t tell a story without great video, and the hero video is the first thing a visitor sees when they open the new UWMDI website. We produced a high-quality, brand-aligned video that highlights the people, the labs, and the research in a way that’s engaging and immediately communicates the significance of the institute’s mission. For a potential donor or patient visiting for the first time, it sets the tone for everything that follows.
