Wednesday, April 22, 2026, is Earth Day! Earth Day 2026 falls within Earth Week, a week-long celebration of environmental awareness and climate activism observed by more than one billion people worldwide. It’s a time to reflect, take action, and connect with your community around important environmental causes.

What to Prioritize for Earth Day 2026

There are many great ways to get involved and find events local to you this Earth Day. Earthday.org offers a national search tool to locate community cleanups, teach-ins, volunteer opportunities, and community organizing events, a great place to start your planning.

Generally, to maximize your impact, it’s worth doing a little research upfront to identify local areas or organizations that may need extra support. For example, the Puget Sound area experienced a significant weather event in December 2025 that caused widespread erosion, trail washouts, farm devastation, and increased runoff, leaving many environmental conservation and restoration organizations in need of additional support heading into this year.

Seattle Earth Day Activities

Within the Greater Seattle area, there are plenty of volunteer, fundraising, and community-led events to take part in. Some of our favorite resources for finding these events include:

Additional Earth Day Ideas

If getting to a community event isn’t in the cards this year, there are still plenty of meaningful ways to support climate action and environmental conservation. One of the most impactful options is donation; many small nonprofits actually prefer monetary contributions, as funds allow them to direct resources exactly where they’re needed most.

Beyond donating, there are simple everyday actions that can make a real difference:

  • Learn more about your carbon impact by calculating your carbon footprint.
  • Swap your car commute for a zero-emission or lower-emission alternative. Bike, walk, or take public transit to reduce your carbon footprint.
  • Shop local, choose locally grown produce and goods, and learn about your local impact.
  • Start a pollinator garden or plant new native vegetation in your yard or community space.
  • Do a trash pickup in your neighborhood or a nearby green space.
  • Swap out single-use products for reusable alternatives.
  • Get involved in specialty recycling programs like Ridwell to reduce waste sent to landfills.
  • Write to a local representative about an environmental issue you care about.
