Chanty Uch

From Danté: Today, I want to honor my mother, Chanty Uch, whose story of resilience deeply inspires me. Surviving the brutalities of war in Cambodia and the hardships of refugee life, she brought our family to the United States with strength and positivity that, even today, seems boundless. Despite the shadows of her past, she embodies an incredible light, teaching me the invaluable lesson of perseverance. Her journey has not only shaped my identity as a first-generation Cambodian-American but also paved a path for our family’s future. My mother’s legacy is a testament to the power of hope and the unyielding human spirit.

Darlene Knecht

From Houston: Since childhood, I’ve found an unwavering source of warmth, support, and unconditional love in one person: my grandma, Darlene Knecht, affectionately known as Grandy. She’s been my steadfast cheerleader through every personal and professional milestone, always just a phone call or text away — unless she’s off on another globe-trotting adventure with her husband, Poppie. Grandy’s influence has been profound and enduring, making her the most impactful figure in my life.

Mrs. Kathy Dungan

From Talia: I’d like to recognize one of the most impactful teachers I had along the way today: Kathy Dungan, my 1st- and 2nd-grade teacher. It’s incredible how much of a difference an aspirational and dedicated educator can have; I credit Mrs. Dungan for my lasting passion for writing, which has been foundational in my continued education, career, and life.
